Eleusa Ukrayina, 2022. Oil on canvas, 90x70 cm.

Eleusa Ukrayina

This painting was sparked by the war in Ukraine, and inspired by photos of women and young children sheltering underground from the bombs, but also by Orthodox icons which, historically as well as contemporarily, carry deep significance. The mother in the painting shows strength and defiance, but also tenderness. Hope and courage radiate from her, as she protects her young child. The painting symbolizes what the Ukrainians are fighting for; their children and future, their democratic values, their culture and faith, in a strong statement against Russia's twisted claims that Ukrainians are cultureless nazis and satanists.

Ukraine Will Prevail, 1

This painting shows the ruins of a residential building in Mariupol, reduced to a concrete skeleton by Russia - even though they claim that they do not attack civilian infrastructure.

When the first photos of residential houses hit by Russian missiles appeared in the news, it was a deep shock. Now we see them every day.

This painting highlights an individual building, which a year ago was alive with its inhabitants.

The rising sun casts its glow on the damaged building, symbolizing hope and encouragement. The leaves of a tree, seemingly fragile, have sprung out, powered by indomitable life. Spring will come, Ukraine will prevail.

Ukraine Will Prevail, 2

In some Ukrainian frontline regions farmers have not been able to harvest under the constant Russian fire. The left side of this painting shows the bleak winter of 2022/2023, smoke rising from a frontline city and unharvested sunflowers  in a nearby field.

The right side shows what will come, when Ukraine has been victorius and peace is restored.
